There is something so unbelievably magical about the African bush and the way it draws in your soul. The safari getaways out in the wild, out of the city, away from technology, and connecting with nature are what I miss most about home. The South African bush brings a real sense of nostalgia and peace.
There is a great article published in The Guardian about how to safari in South Africa on a budget. If you have not yet experienced an African safari you should definitely get a booking.
The best things about the South African safari experience
1. You get to experience peace and tranquillity in its purest form
Away from the busy city life, traffic, and day-to-day chaos, you will find something so surreal about the silence you experience in the bush. You are surrounded by wildlife and there is nothing quite like falling asleep to the sound of nature. When in nature you feel your humanity so intensely. The peace you feel cannot even be explained, it has to be experienced.
2. There is something magical about a bush sunset
You can witness a true African sunset out in the wild. Sunset is the most enchanting time to be in the bushveld and it’s my favourite. Staring out into the far horizons of the wild while the sun slowly slips away reminds us just how small we are in this big world. A bush sunset is the epitome of the open savannah plains with a tree in the background and the silhouette of a giraffe strolling past, so embraced by the pink and red glow of the sky.
3. Campfire
I can’t quite explain the feeling of sitting around a campfire after dinner and sipping on some Amarula. Storytelling, reminiscing about the day’s adventures and listening to the sounds of the wildlife is what a campfire is all about.
4. Stargazing
On a clear night, the abundance of stars will take your breath away. Gazing up invokes a sense of awe and wonder with a milky way that spans across the heavens. The clarity of the stars and planets often make them feel much closer to us and shooting stars create a sense of magic. Hence, the night sky is one of Africa’s richest blessings.
5. Connecting with nature
We live in a world where technology rules our lives and as a result, we are spending less time focusing on ourselves and our loved ones. The African bush is an invaluable opportunity for us to reconnect with our loved ones, forget about the ‘real’ world and engage with ourselves. Als,o a trip to the bush gives us a feeling of coming home. Nature feeds the soul and reminds us to stop and focus on the little things.
There is no place on Earth quite like South Africa and my heart and soul will forever be drawn to Africa. If you want to read more about South Africa you can check out my Cape Town post.
