Health and fitness is a big part of who I am and plays a major part in my daily life. But I will be the first one to admit that my number one dilemma is how to stay in shape while traveling. There is a freedom about experiencing new places that just makes all your good judgement fly out the window. Before you know it, you find yourself indulging in everything that you know is bad for you.

2. Set a limit
It is so easy to completely lose track of the day when you on holiday. Before you know it, you’ve had the equivalent of two breakfasts, three lunches, snacks and dinner that could feed four. Or you find yourself snacking the entire day, and by the time you’ve realised that you’ve already had four pastries, it’s too late. How about setting a limit for yourself? Sure you on holiday and you should indulge but how about setting a limit on just how much you can cheat-eat. Perhaps you can set a limit that says you are allowed one cheat a day. If you feel like a donut in the morning that’s fine but then you can’t have that delicious looking piece of cake with your afternoon tea.
I think the question of how to stay in shape while traveling is more simple than many people think. As always, it’s all about moderation, even when you are on holiday. If you set limits for yourself you will also be more aware of what you are consuming. Being more aware will make it less likely that you will over-indulge since you will think about it instead of just making a hasty decision.
3. Be strategic
Of course there’ll be days when you just want to indulge in the delicacies of the beautiful places you visiting. And that’s completely fine but if you overdo it one day, maybe keep a close eye on yourself the next day. It’s all about balance when it comes to the question of how to stay in shape while traveling. While it’s not ideal to break your diet, it’s better in moderation than following that pattern for your entire trip. If you know you going for a big dinner on one particular night and you don’t want to be watching what you eat then have a really strict day prior to that.
4. Move those legs
Do you really need to take a taxi or bus somewhere a few blocks away? Walking is a great way to experience a new city and burn calories at the same time. Choosing to sightsee by foot rather than by tourist bus, not only means that you can explore at your own leisure, discovering hidden gems along the way, but you will also rack up an impressive amount of daily steps. 5. Buy groceries instead of always eating out
If you are buying the groceries and regulating what you eat, you will be a lot more conscious of what you are putting in your mouth. And always, ALWAYS carry water with you. As we all know, water is essential to keeping healthy and plays a big part in our diet. Traveling also dehydrates the body and water is a great way to satisfy hunger and helps you to stay alert.
7. Determine how you will exercise on your trip before you leave
When we travel, we generally have an itinerary that outlines a schedule for everything. It should be no different when it comes to fitness. Many hotels are equipped with gyms, pools or may even offer a few exercise classes, such as aerobics. If not, there might be some fitness centres nearby to where you staying or you could even put together your own exercise routine for each morning. Once you know what’s on offer around where you will be staying you can add your exercise plans to your itinerary. Whatever you decide to do, having a plan in place means that you are 99% more certain to follow through.
8. Dance! Dance! Dance
I have left the best for last. Dancing is a great way to get your heart rate up, get rid of extra body fat, and build lean muscle. The best part is that it’s FUN! So instead of spending all your time at the bar, you can opt to dance the night away. You can expect to burn at least 180 calories in just 30 minutes.
