Norway Trondheim

Trondheim: A piece of heaven in Norway

Our recent trip to Croatia involved a 24 hour flight Layover in Trondheim on our journey back to London. This means we had some time, as short as it may have been, to explore a little part of Norway, one of the most beautiful countries on Earth!

After long flight delays and little sleep Trondheim was a breath of much needed fresh air! Norway’s third largest city formerly known as Trondhjem or Nidaros is the greenest city I have ever seen! Filled with colourful buildings, waterways, lush landscapes and rich culture combining music, art, politics, student life and nightlife this is one of the most exciting cities of Northern Europe!

Here’s 4 photo’s to inspire you to add Trondheim to your bucket list

1. Nidaros Cathedral

Norway’s national sanctuary, built over the grave of St. Olav, Norway’s patron saint is one of the most beautiful cathedrals that you will ever see. The incredible architecture of the only gothic styled cathedral in Norway will make this a trip to remember.

2. Old Town Bridge

The landscape view from this 300 year old bridge is like no other! This is one of the most photogenic spots in Norway and a great place to snap a shot outlining the colourful warehouses, green landscape and Nidelva river! The bridge is also known as “The Gate of Happiness” and I hear that it is good luck to kiss on the bridge…..

3. Nidelva River

You can find the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely picnic along the riverbank of this waterway! This is a great place to take in the amazing views and bask in the peace and tranquillity. If you have more time you could also take a kayak down the river or take a boat tour out to the sea

4. Café Le Frere

As a coffee fanatic I must include this on my list! With exceptionally high alcohol prices, coffee has become the substitute and subsequently placed Norway in the globe’s top three coffee consuming nations. Italy is home of the espresso but Norway is teaching the world how to brew the best coffee! This cozy little café is a great place to get your hands on some of Norway’s finest ‘kaffe’.
